Richard has been involved in the tourism business in Southern Africa for over 10 years. He is managing director of African Horizons Ltd a budget tourism company that last year welcomed 12,000 visitors to Zambia. The company employs 130 people in 7 locations.

The practice was established in 1964 by Gabriël Fagan.  It has received eleven awards from the Institute of Architects, among which were the Worcester Open-Air Museum, the Mossel Bay Museum complex, the S A Breweries Visitor’s Centre Complex at Newlands, the Klein Constantia wine cellar, the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Infections Diseases for the University of Cape Town, the restoration of Government House and the restoration of Church Street Tulbagh after the 1969 earthquake.    Other awards received were the Fulton award for concrete design, the Eskom Energy Effective Design Award and five gold medals from various bodies like the National Monument’s Council, the S A Institute of Architects and the State President’s Award for Meritorious Service.
