Proposed Facilities in
the Forest Area
The southern slopes of Signal Hill
are presently covered by exotic vegetation and crossed
by a number of paths and tracks. It is proposed to
incorporate a Luge track into this area which will start
from the Signal Hill summit and end at the Magazine
site. Exotic vegetation will be removed progressively
and appropriate indigenous species planted as part of a
rehabilitation programme. Firebreaks, fire management,
refuse clearance and litter management will be
undertaken by the developer as will the provision of an
efficient security system. Paths through the area will
link to the Table Mountain system and will incorporate
the Lion Battery site.

After leaving the summit station the luge track
descends into the forest. The track varies from 6ft
to 8 ft and is made from reinforced concrete. This
concrete would be coloured to blend with the
existing ground cover of the hill. As the track
enters the forest it would split into 3.
Each track has a different gradient and severity,
much the same as a ski resort. The longest of these
tracks and the most gentle would be almost three km
long while the fast track is just under two. After
winding down through the forest the tracks all come
together and bring riders to the lower luge station.
The forest on signal hill has a number of existing
tracks within and these would be utilised for the
luge tracks.
The luge track cannot be seen at all from the city
or the summit of the hill.
The building of the track is not a major undertaking
and once complete has no effect at all
environmentally.
The luge carts make very little noise and within
100yards can not be heard at all. They run on solid
rubber wheels.
Luge carts are non-polluting since they run on
gravity.
