 Proposed Facilities to the
 Tamboerskloof Magazine Site

  • Cable Car Lower Station

The Cable car lower station would be situated on the right of the red sheds as you look at the magazine site from the city. Studies are ongoing on which cableway system is best suited to this project.

It was originally envisaged that a two seater chair lift would be best. However a gondola system is now being considered since this has advantages in poor weather and with volumes of people.

Whichever system is eventually  chosen the building is very low key.

  • The old Magazines

At present it is in very poor repair and many of the original fixtures have been stolen. The building is a National heritage site and as such we propose a complete renovation. This building would then be used for art exhibits and possibly a wine bar/restaurant. We would also propose housing the Cape Core historical society within this building.

The grounds of the magazine would be landscaped within the remit of existing contours to provide a recreation area very similar to Spear wine estate. A lake would form the central focus. Parking for vehicles is split into 4 main areas thus allowing access control and minimising congestion. The peripheral magazine buildings would be renovated and  house cafes, wine bars and restaurants.

The red shed. Situated at the top of the magazine site this would be renovated and turned into a craft market. We are proposing that the Bo-kaap community become involved in this retail area. The sheds would house market stands much like the red shed at the waterfront.

  • National Heritage

Would guide the renovations to the old magazine buildings.

  • Visual Impact

The only new building at the site is that of the car parks and lower cable car station. With landscaped grounds, the planting of hundreds of indigenous trees and shrubs the renovation of existing buildings and the removal of derelict structures and rubbish the visual impact of the site should be much improved.

  • Environmental Impact

The luge project has almost no environmental impact. The carts run on gravity and the cable station on 3 phase power. The planting of trees will considerably improve the look of the area.

  • Noise

The lower cable car station runs on 3 phase power. This produces a very gentle and hum which at 30 years is hard to hear. The luge carts produce very low level noise which is can not be heard at any distance.

  • Access

Access to the old magazine would be free.
By foot visitors could gain access from descending down footpaths through the forest, up Carisbrook road or through Tamboreskloof via Milner.
By road access would be from Buitengracht up Carisbrook and then directly into the site.
